Old traditions, nouveau wines

The history of nouveau wines, ie. wines that are sold in the same year as they were harvested, comes from France at the early 1900’s. Back then winemakers around Lyon fought hard to get their product to restaurants earlier than the competition. The rivalry was ended by a decree designating the 15th of November as the earliest date of selling nouveau wine. They changed the rule in 1975. From then on the official debut of this year's Beaujolais is the third Thursday of November 00:01.

The tradition of nouveau wines has been conquering countries since then. Most countries allow earlier sales, but the first Beaujolais of the year is always opened at that time.

Beaujolais nouveau is made with the so-called carbonic maceration method, whereby the whole grapes are fermented in a carbon dioxide rich environment prior to crushing. The resulting wine is fruity with very low tannins: the tastes resemble raspberries, strawberries, cherries, even bananas.
